How Music Impacts The Brain
Listening to music impacts the entire brain. It is proven to boost creativity in artists, increase focus in students, and enhance athletic performance in athletes causing them to run longer, faster, and harder. Music stimulates all of the memory centers in the brain. It has also been proven that the brain is able to retrieve lost memories in people with declined brain function. Hearing music from their 20s, boosted memory in geriatric patients with severe brain injury. Intense pleasure in response to music can lead to dopamine release in the brain. Just like biting into a piece of chocolate or having sex, listening to music, gives us a pleasurable experience. Dopamine is released during our favorite part of the song along with the verse just before it. This creates a sense of tension and release. The brain can predict when the beat is going to drop, or when the tension is going to be released. When the brain is correct on its prediction, it gets another rush of dopamine. This can be felt in all types of music, especially pop and electronic music. Music is an extremely powerful stimulus and can be considered a link to the past in the future.
